Their leaves are small and
shiny. They are dark green in color with a leathery
appearance. In the fall, fruit will appear that will mature
and you can also expect a marvelous color display.
In its natural state, these
magnificent trees can grow to heights of around 60 feet, and
are slow growing. They can be grown indoors or outdoors and
will tolerate the colder conditions, although they will need
shelter from harsh conditions like frost or snow. Cold
draughty locations will not be tolerated well. Ideally they
can handle either full sun or full shade, although do make
sure they have a good amount of light if choosing a shady
position. To ensure maximum growth, keep your Chinese Elm
Bonsai tree moist year round, but don't overwater. Too much
sun can cause them to dry out, so in hot summer conditions
make sure the tree has adequate amounts of water. Try to
position your bonsai in a well ventilated area as these
trees prefer locations with air movement.
Although the Chinese Elm
Bonsai Tree is one of the easier bonsai's to grow, you will
need to repot this tree every couple of years. So as not to
cause any shock to the tree's root system, this will need to
be done a month either side of the tree's major pruning
time, which will be best after its growth period in the
early months of spring. One other advantage is that whilst
other bonsai's are prone to diseases such as Dutch elm
disease, the Chinese Elm is not one of them, making it a
nice hardy tree for beginners.
Your Chinese Elm bonsai
tree will require weekly feeding also. It is important not
to feed your tree, if you are growing it indoors and it is
out of leaf. If you have an outdoor bonsai then feeding
should occur after the buds have opened in the spring. Feed
with fertilizer high in nitrogen for a period of up to one
month and then bi weekly until late in the Summer time. Care
must be taken when wiring your Chinese Elm Bonsai Tree as
the bark marks easily.
Follow these simple steps
for an amazing tree that is sure to impress everyone.
I wish you all the best on your
Chinese elm bonsai tree adventure!
Best wishes,
Thomas T :)
